Dehydrated vs Dry Skin - What's The Difference?
Similar but not the same!
How many times have you felt your skin dull and tight and just assumed that you have dry skin? Probably more than once, especially in the cooler months.
Dehydrated skin is actually a temporary dermal condition where the skin lacks water and causes cellular disorganisation. The cells at the surface of the skin lose their cohesion, which leads to excessive evaporation of the water located in the layers of the epidermis.
Dehydration can occur in all skin types and is caused by external factors such as changes in the weather, hot showers or air-conditioning. It is characterised by sensitive and irritable skin with fine, dry surface lines that make your skin feel tight and can give you a tingling or itchy sensation in certain spots.
On the other hand, dry skin is a permanent skin type meaning that the skin lacks oil. It is caused by internal factors that prevent the skin from producing lipids properly, a phenomenon related to sebaceous glands. If you have dry skin, you have probably realised that your skin looks a bit dull and flaky and your face feels consistently tight and tingly.
Now, what can I do?
The daily stresses that the skin is subjected to can easily alter the protective film of the epidermis. The skin feels tight, rough to the touch, and becomes uncomfortable.
To ensure proper hydration of the epidermis, your moisturiser must provide both water, the element essential to the cells’ rehydration, and lipids, to ensure an effective barrier against water loss in order to reduce trans-epidermal evaporation.
Since our goal is to restore your skin's comfort, Avène has released a new product to our Hydrance range: the Hydrance Hydrating Sleeping Mask. It contains the same innovation as the Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum, Hydrance Light Hydrating Emulsion & Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream : Cohederm™ Complex. It’s a lipid trio that restores the skin’s natural hydration barrier by enabling better cohesion between the epidermal cells.
On top of that, it also counts on the complementary action of Pre-tocopheryl, a powerful antioxidant, to protect the skin cells from free radicals and detoxify the skin, and Dextran Sulfate, a decongestant to reduce signs of fatigue.
Formulated for all types of dehydrated sensitive skin, this all-in-one sleeping mask moisturises, soothes and detoxifies dehydrated skin with an extremely refreshing aqua-gel texture. It provides intense hydration while you sleep, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. By morning, the skin is intensely hydrated, luminous and smooth for a fresh, healthy glow.
For a complete regime, pair it with the light and refreshing – yet intensely hydrating – Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum and one of the Hydrance moisturisers based on your skin’s specific needs. Hydrance Light Hydrating Emulsion for normal to combination sensitive skin, or the Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream for dry to very dry sensitive skin.
As a final step in your night-time routine, go for the new Hydrance Hydrating Sleeping Mask.
More tips for thirsty skin:
Of course, having the right beauty routine for your skin type can make a tremendous difference to your skin but there are also other things you need to take care of in order to keep your skin hydrated 24/7, especially now that winter is coming!
First of all, make sure that you drink enough water throughout the day. It's always tempting to grab a hot chocolate, tea or coffee when it's starting to get chilly outside but keeping a water bottle next to you will be more beneficial in the long run.
Also, eating foods with a high-water content such as watermelon, apples, oranges, zucchini, celery and carrots will help you hydrate your skin from the inside out.
Another good option is to place a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture to the air and prevent dryness at night.
Finally, no matter how good a hot shower feels in winter, don't forget to wash your face with lukewarm water. Otherwise, you will strip the natural oils from your skin!
Now that you know what you can do to help restore and maintain your skin's hydration, you’re ready to embrace your new skincare routine with open, woolly-jumpered arms!
