Dehydrated vs Dry Skin - What's The Difference?
Similar but not the same!
How many times have you felt your skin dull and tight and just assumed that you have dry skin? Probably more than once especially in the cooler months.
Dehydrated skin is actually a temporary dermal condition where the skin lacks water and causes cellular disorganisation. The cells at the surface of the skin lose their cohesion, which leads to excessive evaporation of the water located in the layers of the epidermis.
Dehydration can occur in all skin types and is caused by external factors such as changes in the weather, hot showers or air-conditioning. It is characterised by sensitive and irritable skin with fine, dry surface lines that make your skin feel tight and can give you a tingling or itchy sensation in certain spots.
On the other hand, dry skin is a permanent skin type meaning that the skin lacks oil. It is caused by internal factors that prevent the skin from producing lipids properly, a phenomenon related to sebaceous glands. If you have dry skin, you have probably realised that your skin looks a bit dull and flaky and your face feels consistently tight and tingly.
Now, what can I do?
The daily stresses that the skin is subjected to can easily alter the protective film of the epidermis. The skin feels tight, rough to the touch, and becomes uncomfortable.
To ensure proper hydration of the epidermis, your moisturiser must provide both water, the element essential to the cells’ rehydration, and lipids, to ensure an effective barrier against water loss in order to reduce trans-epidermal evaporation.
Since our goal is to restore your skin's comfort, Avène has released new and improved formulas for two products in our Hydrance range: Hydrance Intense Serum and Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream. The innovation? Cohederm™ Complex, a lipid trio that restores the skin’s natural hydration barrier by enabling better cohesion between the epidermal cells.
Light and refreshing, Avène’s Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum is a unique serum that is ultra-concentrated with the soothing and softening Avène Thermal Spring Water. This helps restore the skin with intense and long-lasting hydration* by refilling the skin’s natural water reservoirs and significantly reducing fine lines caused by dehydration**.
Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream is a rich, creamy daily moisturiser for sensitive skin that provides immediate, long-lasting hydration* and helps prevent water evaporating from the skin. The skin is left with a velvety finish, feeling soothed and nourished.
Hydrate, Rinse, Repeat!
Start by cleansing your face with our Cleansing Foam (for normal to combination sensitive skin) or Gentle Milk Cleanser (for dry to very dry sensitive skin). Then, spray a fine mist of Avène Thermal Spring Water to soothe and soften your skin. Pat dry with a towel (no rubbing!) and evenly apply Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum to the face, neck and neckline to restore and strengthen your skin's barrier and smooth fine lines caused by dryness**. Follow with Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream, which has a lightweight and refreshing aqua-film texture to help alleviate any sensations of tingling and tightness. Now enjoy your skin looking and feeling soft, smooth and radiant!
More tips for thirsty skin:
Of course having the right beauty routine for your skin type can make a tremendous difference to your skin but there are also other things you need to take care of in order to keep your skin hydrated 24/7, especially now that winter is coming!
First of all, make sure that you drink enough water throughout the day. It's always tempting to grab a hot chocolate, tea or coffee when it's starting to get chilly outside but keeping a water bottle next to you will be more beneficial in the long run.
Also, eating foods with a high water content such as watermelon, apples, oranges, zucchini, celery and carrots will help you hydrate your skin from the inside out.
Another good option is to place a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture to the air and prevent dryness at night.
Finally, no matter how good a hot shower feels in winter, don't forget to wash your face with lukewarm water. Otherwise, you will strip the natural oils from your skin!
Now that you know what you can do to help restore and maintain your skin's hydration, you’re ready to embrace your winter skincare routine with open, woolly-jumpered arms!
