THE SUN HELPS ACNE... AND OTHER ACNE MYTHS!

Days are long, sun is up, life’s good and… yikes... hello breakouts!

Hotter temps, humidity and more time spent outdoors makes the perfect environment for breakouts to form.
So, if summer has served up a side of oily skin, breakouts and blemishes, then keep reading as we break down skincare myths for acne-prone skin!

Myth 1: The sun is good for acne

MYTH #1: THE SUN IS GOOD FOR ACNE

Just no. Nope. Don’t do it. We’re sorry to break this attractive myth: too much sun exposure is bad for your skin* and can even make your acne-prone skin worse in the long run.

Let us break it down for you:

When you spend time in the sun, your skin’s immediate response is to release oil and water as it dries out. Deprived of these two essential components, your dehydrated skin produces more sebum to compensate.

At the same time, the drying effect of all that sun can causes your skin cells to harden, making it more difficult for dead skin cells to shed and for sebum to be released from the pores. This is when comedones appear. To you and me, comedones are blackheads and whiteheads!

MYTH #2: WEARING SUNSCREEN WILL MAKE ME BREAKOUT

Adding an extra step to your routine might seem like a recipe for clogged pores, however, exposing your sensitive skin to UV rays is a very bad idea.

Hopefully we all know by now that UV rays cause premature skin ageing and may increase the risks of developing some skin cancers, but for those of us with acne-prone skin, UV rays can also make acne scars darken and less likely to fade over time!

Acne-prone skin is sensitive (even more so if you are taking acne medication)** so to suit your oily, acne-prone *and* sensitive skin, choose a lightweight non-greasy sunscreen that is non-comedogenic and free from potential sensitisers like fragrances. Avène Aqua-Fluid SPF 50+*** offers an ultra-lightweight texture is fragrance free and has a very high broad-spectrum UVB-UVA protection.

Myth 3: oily skin doesn't need moisturiser

MYTH #3: OILY SKIN DOESN'T NEED MOISTURISER

Thinking of skipping the moisturiser to avoid looking greasy and sweaty? Think twice! It is still important to keep your skin hydrated as it can produce more oil to compensate with hotter temps. Your moisturiser will create a barrier to lock in hydration throughout the day.

Now, wearing both a moisturiser AND a sunscreen sounds a bit intense? Swap your regular moisturiser for a lightweight gel version with a matte finish like Cleanance Comedomed Anti-Blemish Concentrate, specifically adapted to oily and acne-prone skin.

MYTH #4: I SHOULD WASH MORE TO GET RID OF ACNE

You might want to give your skin an extra scrub but unfortunately, breakouts can’t be washed away. In fact, over-washing can have the complete opposite effect as it can severely dry out skin and lead to further breakouts.

Our (hot) tip: don’t overdo it to avoid irritating your skin. Wash your face and body no more than twice a day and sub in a cleanser that is formulated for acne-prone skin. Top up this routine with a gentle exfoliation twice a week to get rid of dead skin cells.

YOUR SUMMER SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

1. Cleanse: say bye to oil overload
The first step to getting rid of excess of sebum is to wash it twice a day with a soap-free gentle cleanser formulated for oily and acne-prone skin like our Cleanance Cleansing Gel that comes in an XL 400ml size and can be used on both the face and body...

2. Moisturise: hydrate your thirsty skin
Not moisturising your acne-prone or oily skin- not an option! Just keep it lightweight with a non-comedogenic moisturiser with a matte finish. Cleanance Comedomed Anti-Blemish Concentrate is formulated with ComedoclastinTM to reduce blemishes and blackheads and which helps regulate the excess production of sebum while keeping your skin hydrated.

3. Protect: SPF for the win
Applied after your moisturiser, sunscreen is your ultimate skin protector, “I can’t go outside without it” step! Afraid it’s going to be too much for your oily and acne-prone skin? Choose a lightweight texture and forget about it as soon as it’s applied! We like our Avène Aqua-Fluid SPF 50+*** with minimum chemical filters, no fragrance and a pocket-sized bottle! Take it everywhere with you and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day!

4. Exfoliate: give your skin a breather
Help dead skin cells see their way out by gently exfoliating two times a week- max! Avène Gentle Exfoliating Gel formula is non-comedogenic and rich in Avène Thermal Spring Water to soothe your sensitive skin. Say hi to your fresh skin and don’t forget to moisturise after!
