Stats from Melanoma Insititute Australia
In Australia, sunscreen shouldn’t be seasonal. When the UV index is 3 and above, sun protection is required. In some parts of Australia- that is every single day. So, find a sunscreen that actually feels good to apply, is appropriate for your skin type, meets your needs and then wear it every day.
Of course, sunscreen can’t do all the heavy lifting. For the best protection, combine all five SunSmart steps- wear protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and seek shade.
Sunscreen should be applied before makeup. You'll want to wait about 20 minutes for your sunscreen to absorb before heading outdoors (or getting any sun exposure). Applying sunscreen over makeup can interfere with your look, especially if you’re wearing foundation and other base makeup. It may slide around or melt off altogether, forcing you to start right back at square one.
Our tips:
• Apply sunscreen to your entire face, including the tops of your ears and under and around your eyes. Don’t forget your neck and decolletage.
• Let the sunscreen absorb for at least a minute before putting on makeup.
Considering 95% of melanomas in Australia are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (or UV) radiation, melanoma CAN be prevented according to the Melanoma Institute Australia.
There are three things you can regularly do to reduce your risk of developing melanoma and increase the chances of detecting it early:
1. Protect your skin from the sun
2. Check your own skin for melanoma
3. Have a professional skin check
No matter your past risk factors, the good news is you can reduce your future risk of melanoma at any age by being careful about how and when you spend time in the sun
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE.
Wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear when exposed to the sun. Avoid prolonged exposure in the sun. Reapply frequently to maintain protection.
